Who's behind "Elder Artifacts"?
I'd like to tell you, who Elder Artifacts actually is, where i'm from and how my path as an artisan & creative unfolded and what influences made my style of work as it is today.
The person
For the inclined reader here are a few key data about me. I live & work in Mönchengladbach in North Rhine-Westphalia and am in my early 40s. Originally I come from the north of the republic and I still like to be there.
I have been involved with crafts and art in general for many years and started goldsmithing sometime around 14 or 15 years ago. Most of it was self-taught, but every now and then I was able to get some help from masters of their trade.
Furthermore, I have a great weakness for woodcuts and wood engravings of the 15th and 16th century and my workshop resembles a small museum.
Literary I am a big fan of horror literature of the 19th and early 20th century and authors like Blackwood & Edgar Allan Poe, but also especially H. P. Lovecraft and Clark Ashton Smith.
Furthermore I am a musician and bass player in a doom metal band and some other music projects since my youth.
My influences
I am very strongly influenced in the formal language and design of my pieces by the work of the goldsmiths of late antiquity (around about 200 AD), the Migration Period and especially the early Middle Ages in Northern Europe until the 11th century.
I spent almost 10 years almost exclusively demonstrating crafts using historical techniques and tools in various open-air museums in Europe, studying the techniques, finds and special features of these periods. This has influenced me a lot and can still be seen in many details of my work.
In recent years I have increasingly expanded my influences to include borrowings from taxidermy, symbolism & content of various occult movements and other areas of art. All this has made my
style to that, which he is today. I am often asked that my pieces have a high recognition value. That pleases me of course very much! I would be happy if you also like my style.
My way of working
Created during my time in the open-air museums, I have always worked with a whole range of reconstructions of historical tools, in most cases forged and made for me by hand according to my specifications and finds of the respective eras. This leads from a large selection of hammers and pliers, files, holding and drawing sticks and other objects made of wood to natural materials such as pumice powder and horsetail for grinding and finishing surfaces.
Meanwhile, some modern tools have also found their way into the workshop, such as a polishing bench or micromotors for drilling and detail work. This allows me to use a variety of newer techniques and make jewelry, which in the past I was only able to make with extreme effort.
A rare technique that I have worked on intensively is the etching of silver and precious metals. This not quite harmless technique is not often seen and I like the
so created pieces especially like.
